What is Zirconia?

Zirconia is a Zirconium based material; it is a gray-white metal made of a mineral called zircon. The main disadvantage of a zirconia dental crown is the price: the material, the zirconia, costs more than porcelain. The construction of the crown is a lot more complex and causes a lot more wear and tear while using much more advanced technologies – which makes it much more expensive.

There’s no doubt that the advantages of a zirconia dental crown are far greater than the price disadvantage: when you need a frontal tooth crown, zirconia is by far more preferrable for patients and doctors alike, especially thanks to the aesthetic qualities of the material. If it’s a back tooth that is mostly used for chewing, some might still choose zirconia, but most people would prefer porcelain or other available options.
