Sinus Lift in Jerusalem
Sinus lift is a medical procedure that simulates a bone implantation usually performed prior to dental implantation treatments. That is, while in some cases implants can be implanted without the need for a sinus lift, in other cases there’s not enough bone for the implantation, especially when a sinus lift surgery is performed in the upper jaw prior to the implantation process.
What is a Sinus Lift?
The sinuses are cavities located within the facial bone structure in both sides of the nose. When the need for a dental implantation in the upper jaw rises, there’s not always enough of the bone to receive the implant, and the sinus lift procedure artificially lifts the existing bone. That way there’s enough space for the dental implant, and it will be well held in its place.
There are two different types of this procedure: an open sinus lift that is only required for more complicated cases, and a closed sinus lift that is designated for the simpler cases.
Open Sinus Lift
This procedure is only performed when there’s a significant lack of bone volume. As part of the procedure, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon opens a gap in the upper jaw, through which they inject a unique substance that has bone-like qualities. In some cases, the dental implants can be installed during the treatment, and in other cases the area will be stitched up and there’ll be a waiting period until the treated area is fully recovered before proceeding with the rest of the treatment. After several recovery months, the procedure can be continued, and the crowns can be installed over the implants.
Closed Sinus Lift
This procedure takes place when some bone volume is missing, but not a lot of it. In that case, a smaller gap is made, and the sinus floor is lifted using the implant designated space, through which the bone simulation substance is injected. In most cases, the implant itself will also be installed. The recovery from this procedure is short and usually takes a few days only.
Sinus Lift: Side Effects
Sinus lift treatment in Jerusalem is considered to be a surgical procedure which is why a lot of patients have a fear from pain or side effects caused by the treatment, but it is actually a very safe procedure with high success rates. To reduce the risk of infection, it’s best to undergo a tartar removal treatment a few weeks prior to the sinus lift procedure to eliminate as much tartar from the treated area as possible.
Whether it’s an open or closed sinus lift, the procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia (in rare cases, if the patient’s profile requires, it is performed under general anesthesia) – so the process should be painless. After the procedure is over and the anesthesia starts to wear off, there might be some sensation of pain. In that case, follow the dental clinic team’s recommendation for the right painkillers.
Rare side effects include:
- Hemorrhages around the treated area
- Light nostril bleeding or swelling
These side effects usually pass naturally after one week and up to 10 days at most.
If other side effects arise, symptoms that might indicate an infection are felt, or if the painkillers are not helping, contact the clinic for further instructions.
