Hello everyone, this is Dr. Stela Heisler. The most common question from patients who have had dental veneers is: “Doctor, how can I keep my veneers lasting as long as possible?” That is an excellent question, because investing in dental veneers is a significant investment, and I want every one of my patients to get the maximum benefit and the best possible results from their treatment.
Why Is Dental Veneer Maintenance So Important?
Dental veneers, whether porcelain veneers or veneers made from other composite materials, are an effective and beautiful solution for correcting aesthetic dental problems. But like everything beautiful in life, they also require ongoing attention and care. In my many years of experience, I have seen patients whose veneers lasted 15-20 years and more, and unfortunately also those who had to replace them after just a few years.
The Golden Rules for Dental Veneer Maintenance
1. Perfect Oral Hygiene – This Is the Foundation of Everything
I always tell my patients: the veneer itself is very durable, but the natural tooth beneath it can still be affected by cavities or gum inflammation. Therefore, thorough brushing twice a day for at least two minutes, flossing, and rinsing with a quality mouthwash – this is not optional, it is essential.
My professional tip: Use a soft or medium toothbrush. Hard brushes can cause scratches on the veneer surface and damage its natural shine.
2. Beware of Grinding and Unnecessary Biting
I see many patients who come to me with damaged veneers simply because they did not know they needed to be careful. Grinding teeth at night, biting hard objects like pens or ice, or even opening packages with your teeth – all of these can cause irreversible damage to veneers.
In cases of teeth grinding, I recommend a custom-fitted night guard. It is a small investment that can save you a lot of money and pain in the future.
3. Smart Nutrition – What Works and What Doesn’t
There are foods that simply do not suit life with veneers. Hard candies, ice, hard seeds – these can cause cracks or breakage. On the other hand, acidic foods such as citrus fruits, red wine, and coffee can cause staining over time.
My tip: If you do drink something that could stain, do so through a straw and rinse your mouth with water afterward.
4. Regular Maintenance Visits – Don’t Underestimate Them
Every six months, I want to see my patients with veneers. This is not just for a regular dental cleaning – it is also to check that the veneers are firmly in place, that there are no early signs of problems at the bonding points, and that everything looks as it should.
During this visit, I perform a gentle polishing of the veneers with special instruments that can restore their original shine.
5. Early Detection of Problems
Learn to know your veneers. If you feel something sharp, notice a color change, or sense that something does not feel the way it used to – come to me right away. Small problems caught early can be resolved easily, but if you wait – they can turn into large and costly issues.
What Not to Do – The Common Mistakes
The biggest mistake I see is treating veneers as if they are completely indestructible. True, they are strong – but not impervious. Another common mistake is using aggressive whitening toothpaste – it can damage the surface of the veneer.
When Do Veneers Need to Be Replaced?
High-quality porcelain veneers can last 15-25 years with proper care. But there are signs that indicate it is time for replacement: cracks, significant color changes, or when the gums begin to recede and the lower portion of the veneer becomes exposed.
My Message to You
Remember – your dental veneers are an investment in your appearance and self-confidence. With the right care, they can remain beautiful and functional for decades. Do not cut corners on the quality of the initial treatment, but also do not neglect the ongoing maintenance.
I am here for you with any question or concern. At my Jerusalem clinic, I see every day how proper care can keep a beautiful smile for many long years. You come to me with a smile, and I want you to keep smiling with confidence 20 years from now.
